How To Cook Brown Rice, And What Are The Recipe Ideas?

Brown rice is consumed just like white rice. Do you want to know more about brown rice? How to cook it? What are the recipes that you can make with brown rice? So, don’t go anywhere and start reading the article.

How to Properly Cook Brown Rice

Cooking brown rice, like white rice, is simple and complex at the same time, and it is essential to know the right proportions and respect a longer cooking time.

Brown Rice Portion per Person

Who hasn’t cooked too much rice for one meal? The dosage is difficult with the naked eye. Here are the doses of brown rice recommended according to the dish you are preparing:

  • 60g per person if rice is the only side dish.
  • 30 g per person if you serve your rice with vegetables.

Good to know: a 20-cl mustard glass represents approximately 150 g of rice.

Cooking Time by Type of Rice

Any whole grain has a longer cooking time than its refined counterpart. And each type of brown rice will not have the same cooking time either. How to find it? Two main categories dominate:

  • Thai and whole-grain basmati rice: 30 minutes of cooking.
  • Camargue rice and Italian rice (especially black rice): 45 to 60 minutes.

Good to know: it is possible to divide this cooking time by two by letting your brown rice soak for 24 hours before cooking it.

Brown rice vermicelli, on the other hand, is ready in just 3 to 4 minutes. These go very well with your soups or spring rolls, for example.

Whole Rice Pilaf

Do you want to cook your brown rice in a more gourmet way? Cooking rice pilaf is simple:

  1. Fry a dose of brown rice in two tablespoons of olive oil.
  2. Once the grains have become translucent, add two volumes of boiling water.
  3. Cover and cook over low heat until all the water is absorbed.
  4. Stir a few minutes after the end of cooking.
  5. Finally, you are free to decorate your rice pilaf with the spices of your choice.

Recipe ideas with brown rice

Brown rice can be cooked in many ways. Let’s discover together some new recipes with brown rice to bring out on all occasions.

Brown Risotto

The type of rice most frequently used for a good risotto is round rice. Opt for short- or medium-grain rice if you don’t have any in your cupboard.

To make a brown risotto with mushrooms and parmesan for four people, you will need the following:

  • Two tablespoons of organic olive oil
  • One onion
  • One clove of garlic
  • 200g organic brown rice
  • 300g mushrooms
  • 100 g finely grated parmesan
  • One organic vegetable stock cube
  • 20 cl of white wine
  • 20 cl of organic liquid full cream
  • organic parsley
  • organic salt and pepper

Then follow these steps:

  1. First of all, dilute the stock cube in a litre of water until it boils.
  2. Rinse and cut the mushrooms.
  3. Finely chop the garlic, clove and onion.
  4. Chop the sprigs of parsley.
  5. In your skillet, heat the olive oil, then sauté the onion and garlic.
  6. Add brown rice. Stir and cook for 2 minutes.
  7. Once the grains have become translucent, lower the heat and pour in the white wine. Wait until the liquid is completely absorbed.
  8. Then, as for classic risotto, gradually add the broth, always over low heat. Cooking brown risotto takes a little longer (about 45 minutes, depending on the type of brown rice chosen). Make sure the grains are tender before serving.
  9. In parallel, brown the mushrooms in a pan with one tablespoon of olive oil. Once the mushrooms are tender, add the parsley, cream, salt and pepper.
  10. Add your preparation to the risotto. Mix gently.
  11. Serve immediately, and add grated Parmesan cheese directly to the plates.

Whole Rice Pudding

As with brown risotto, you can opt for brown rice for the preparation of your rice pudding. This will be delicious for breakfast or as a dessert. Allow about 2 hours of cooking time.

For six people, you will need the following:

  • 150 g of organic brown rice
  • 1 litre and a half of organic milk
  • 120g sugar
  • Liquid honey (optional)

To prepare your brown rice pudding:

  1. In a large saucepan, boil the milk and sugar.
  2. Add brown rice while stirring.
  3. Cook your rice over low heat for 2 hours.
  4. Monitor the cooking by stirring your preparation regularly. This will prevent it from sticking to the bottom of your container.
  5. Serve cold in individual ramekins.
  6. For a gourmet note, add one teaspoon of honey.

Semi-Complete Rice Flour

Semi-complete rice flour easily replaces classic wheat flour for sweet preparations such as pancakes for example. In addition, it has the advantage of being gluten-free. It is, therefore, ideal for intolerant people.

To make your homemade semi-complete rice flour, you will need the following:

  • brown rice (quantity to your liking)
  • a powerful blender
  • of a sieve
  1. Mix your semi-complete rice and sift the flour obtained.
  2. If the grain is too coarse, repeat the operation a second time.
